The lecturer and the class spent the time to edit the text that be an assignment last week. So funny and confused when every friend of mine (and also me) put dots and comas in weird places hahahahaha

Assignments:

- Write a summary of Copyeditor's Handout pages 3 to 28. Make it just one page.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

It's Wednesday and It's Me :D

It was the print screen of my desktop in the middle lunch break. I was working on my Literary Criticism's assignment, downloading a new episode of New Girl and that is a random picture of myself :p

I know it is so silly. But what can I do? I just miss blogging and do not know what should I write. My really tight schedule does not give me time to blog since last week. So busy. So tired. Need hugs :(

Next Five Days at Campus

Meeting: 3rd

I could not believe that the lecturer remember that the class should bring our ‘Next Five Years Plan’ and share it to the rest of the class. Well, here is my plan :)

The class dismissed after everybody finish share their plans and the lecturer explained a bit material about Islamic Entrepreneurship Focus on Eight Principles of Thoughts.

1. Entrepreneurship in a integral parts of Islamic religion
2. By virtue of human nature, the Moslem entrepreneurs are ‘khalifah’ and have the responsibilities developed prosperity and sees business as part of ‘ibadah’ or good deed.
3. Motivator – success in Islam is not merely measured by the end result but also the way and means of achieving them.
4. ‘Ibadah’ – business activity is part of ‘ibadah’ or good deed.

Um, he just explained four of eight principles :p

Assignment: nothing :D

Meeting: 2nd

The lecturer asked three simple and basic questions about this course ;)
1. What is editing?
2. In what ways are editing important?
3. In what professional areas do editors work?
4. Give examples of the work of editing!

The time was not enough to answer all of them. So, he made it as assignment and we also asked to find journal as the references.

(Other) Assignment:
- Edit this text

- Bring scores transcript next week
- Bring a laptop to make learning activity easier
- Read the textbook, Copyeditor’s Handout

Meeting: 2nd

The lecturer explained and gave examples in a funny way. He started with a very basic concept of functional grammar. Functional grammar is focus on the form. It helps us to communicate with other people. What do we communicate? Meaning! We already have meaning in our head then we communicate it in form of language.

The meanings in our head depend on the context of communication. The context can be culture (genre) or situation (register) such as field (transitivity), tenor (mood) and mode (theme).

My first chapter report. Checked!

Assignment: Make a chapter report of chapter 2, MOOD

Meeting: 3rd

The lecturer explained about how to write an annotated bibliography. Annotated bibliography is like a summary of journal, article, book chapter that we already read. We also can write our evaluation about it. It helps us to remember the material without re-read a lot of papers ;D

The writing process is starting with questioning.

- who is the author?
- where is the article published? what type of journal it is?
- what do I know about the topic? am I open to new ideas?
- why was the article written? what is its purpose?
- what is the author's thesis? the major supporting
- did the author support his/her thesis/assertions?
- did the article achieve its purpose?
- was the article-organized?
- did the article change my viewpoint on the topic?
- was the article convicing? what new information or ideas do I accept or reject?

A sample annotated entry

- Bibliography (book/article data like author, year, pages, etc)
- a mini explanation of the author
- summary of book/article
- evaluation
- advice from us

The lecturer also asked what is our topic for research one by one. I planned that I would do a research about comparing novel and the movie version or it have known as film adaptation. I'm wondering how the messages in the original story in the novel transform and interpret in form of film :D

Novel and film is really my thing. I haven't decided the primary source yet. The lecturer warned me to not choose Harry Potter. She suggested me to try The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo :O

Assignment: make just one annotated bibliography from journal or chapter book that support the topic of my research :D

Meeting: 3rd

Our topic this week is Quantitative and Qualitative research!

REMEMBER! Don’t be confused whether our research should use quantitative or qualitative approach. Because Quantitative data can be converse into qualitative data :D

Other important thing to remember:
- Research question plays the important role in doing research
- The way we phrase our research question would be determine the approach we should adopt, the kind of data that we should collect and the sources of data that we should consult.

Quote of the day:
‘Make sure you know what you want (in research)’ – Musthafa (2012)

Assignment: Find and make it two copies of three research questions that we like.

Meeting: 2nd

The lecturer talked and talked, explained this and that and the weird thing is I was really into and enjoy the material :D

Requirements for Successful Translation
- Good understanding of the source text (e.g. English)
- Good command of Bahasa Indonesia (as a target language)
- Good knowledge base of contents
- Good knowledge of translation techniques

We tried to translate two line of Jalaludin Rumi’s Poetry entitled ‘Look! This is Love

I have chosen You alone in the world
Can I then sit and grieve?

The version of translation results were so unique and fun :D

Version#1 - @dos_ssy
Aku telah memilihMu sendiri di dunia
Lalu bolehkah aku duduk dan bermuram durja?

Version #2
Bisakah aku sekarang mendapat kedamaian?

Version #3 - @ppermatasari
Aku telah memilihMu untukku di dunia ini
Maka bisakah aku menempatkanMu dan menyemayamkanMu?

Version #4
Aku telah memilihmu saja di dunia
Lalu dapatkan aku duduk dan berduka?

Version #5
Aku telah memilihMu seorang di dunia
Bisakah kemudian aku duduk dan bersedih?

Version #6 - @safitrialfiani
Aku telah memilihMu Yang Maha Esa
Lalu bolehkahaku bersimpuh dan memohon ampun?

Assignment: Nothing :D

Okay, that's my recap from my campus life. How about yours? :D

Valentine's Day Movies of My Own Opinion

Hari ini Valentine ya? Emang hilalnya udah nampak? *just kidding guys* :p

Enjoy :))

1. A Walk To Remember

Walaupun plot film yang diangkat dari novel best seller karya Nicholas Sparks ini predictable and Mandy Moore didn't play that good, film ini sukses bikin aku nangis dan bergerak buat baca novelnya *lalu aku nangis lagi*. My favorite qoute: "Our love is like the wind. I can't see it, but I can feel it...""

2. 50 First Dates

Jatuh cinta sama perempuan yang punya penyakit hilang ingatan? It's seem impossible yet so sweet. My favorite scene: Ketika si cewek yang punya penyakit hilang ingatan asks to have the first kiss, which is not 'the first' anymore. Then her first kiss happened everyday. Funny and cute :')

3. Original Sin

4. A Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Udah basah, malu, sakit hati pula :'(

5. He's Just Not That Into You

So annoying but so damn true!

6. Before Sunrise

Very recommended! My favorite quote: "Untuk beberapa hal memang harus gak berubah kali, Ndud"

Nah, sekian film-film romantis yang aku pilih buat nemenin Valentine kamu. Ketujuh film ini tidak berurutan koq. Bukan berarti A Walk To Remember lebih aku sukai daripada Hari Untuk Amanda. Semuanya juga aku suka koq :D

Just Find The Sunshine in Your Own Mind

New Girl's soundtrack! Both are Zooey and Hannah's choices. I personally more like Zooey's choice hehehe. Are we going to see video from Jake, Max and Lamorne's choices? I hope so :D

Btw, I just opened my email and knew that I won a giveaway. The email is sent to me three days ago. Kinda worry when I replied it late. I hope I still counted as the winner :p

Happy Sunday y'all :)

Next Five Days at Campus

I supposed to be going to campus only three days. But unplanned situation makes me going to campus five days a week and it will be like forever for this sixth semester. Aaahh, whatever!

This course was scheduled in Thursday. But the lecturer has another schedule at the same day and the same time. Then my class decided to re-schedule the class and moved it to Monday.

This week, my lecturer explained about the basic theories of entrepreneurship from Adam Smith (1776), Jean Babtiste Say (1803), John Struat Mill (1848), Carl Menger (1871), Joseph Aloysius Schumpeter (1934), Alfred Marshall (1936), Ibnu Khaldun or Abdul Rahman Mohamed Khaldun and David McClelland.

My lecturer asked what our dream job in next five years. He asked one by one. My friends’ answers were really inspiring yet hilarious. When it was my turn, I answered that I want to be an editor in publishing house. Aammmiiinn :D

Assignment:
I don’t know if it is a serious assignment or not, but the lecturer asked us to write down our dream and glued it on our room’s wall. He also asked us to take the picture :D

This is the first meeting of Editing course. As usual, the lecturer explained the basic rules, dos and don’ts and syllabus. He divided the evaluation like this,

Participant 20%
Progress Test/ Mid term exam 30%
Assignment/ Final exam 50%

And he also told us that he gives point for our present and absence. +100 for present but -200 for absence without any permission.

We did a little practice about editing text afterwards. The lecturer gave us five sentences in Bahasa Indonesia. He only asked it to be translated into English then he checked our work one by one. Sounds like high school, uh? He is a really detail person and I was amazed :O

Assignment:
Read 10.000 words a day

Book to read: The Copywriter’s Handbook

This is the first meeting and we just talked about the syllabus. In this course, the evaluation is like this.

Chapter Report 15%
Three Group Assignment (mood analysis, transivity analysis and theme and rheme analysis, those should be submit after the chapter has been discussed) 45%
Final Test 40%

The class was so funny and fun. The lecturer spoke in three languages, Sundanese, Bahasa Indonesia and English. I hope I can pass it smoothly because I found some seniors re-contract this course. Iiihh scary :O

Book to read:
Making Sense of Functional Grammar – Gerot & Wignell (1994)

Assignment:
The first chapter report about Text and Context: Genre and Register

This was the first meeting of the course. The lecturer usually just explains the syllabus then the class dismiss early. But in this time. We directly moved to the material and discussed poetry entitled Ozymandias and a song from Coldplay, Viva La Vida.

I was kinda disappointed, because I wanted to have lunch and drink my medicine. But the course was really fun and inspiring. Fyi, this course is about compare something similar or different from any literary works. The works is not always being a text like poetry, short story or novel. It also can be a motion picture, audio, visual or anything else!

This course was inspired me to write a final paper about Novel vs Movie. I was wrote a paper proposal about it in my third semester and I can’t believe it actually exist hehehehe

Books:
- The Gothic Tradition
- Landscape and Literature
- Sastra Bandingan – Sapardi Djoko Damono

Assignments:
- write a mini essay about Ozymandias and Viva La Vida. It can be about the theme, character or else. Just write it in your notes.
- Copy and read ‘Nyai Dasima’

This was the second meeting if this course. The lecturer was explained two slides of the subject matter. First is about an introduction of Literary Criticism and second is about Plagiarisms and Referencing. My friend tried to copy the slide but the lecturer prefers to print it and hand it over next week.

We also remain ourselves about referencing in APA style. The class was so relaxing and dismissed early hahahaha

Quote:
“If you want to survive, just follow what your supervisor said”

Assignment:
- Try to search what is and how to write annotated bibliography
- Bring a laptop (+modem) so we can learn it together with help from Mr. Google :p

This was the second meeting of this course. Instead of just sit and listen to what our lecturers explain, we and our lecturers discussed about how to analyze the data of our research and other questions. Thank God, the lecturers also explained how to collect data in literature fields :)

Assignment:
Answer this question, “what is qualitative and quantitative method? And how it is related to research questions?”

This is the first meeting, but because of the absences of lecturer last week, he decided to move to the material directly. It was kinda of discussed and sharing our personal experiences as translator. I just kept silent and listen to my friend’s because I haven’t do any translation job ever. Oh yeah, I try to translate Pretty Little Liars but that was not a paid translation work.

Oh let me share the evaluation rules of this course.

Participant 10%
Mid test 30%
Two translation project 60%

And according to syllabus, here are the literary works that we’re going to translate. But those are still tentative.
- Love by Czerlaw Milosz
- West Wind by Mary Oliver
- Vanka by Anton Chakhow
- Stockings by Tim O’Brien
- Snow by Ann Beattie

Quote:
"Jangan main-main dengan ketulusan."

Assignment:
Translation methods. What are they? Kinds or types of translation methods? Find good example to illustrate each technique. It can be Newmark or else :)

Language Researchers Association (LRA)

This is a project that I mentioned last week. This project is founded by Sandi Juandi. You can find the more information from his web. Our purpose is to research Baduy’s Language and make it as our final paper. We planned to go to Baduy on June 2012. If you read it and interested to ask something or even be our sponsor, you can contact our leader, Sandi Juandi by his email sandijuandi(at)gmail(dot)com or my email diniynurhasanah(at)gmail(dot)com. I would be really appreciate it :)

I planned to make a blog in Wordpress and write it more about LRA there. Just wait and see ya :)

Huaaa, what a tough week! Let’s focus to do the assignments! :D

Quick Update!

I'm feeling unwell.
I just want to sleep, a very tight one.
Hopefully, someone's arms would be kind to letting me have that just for a moment.
But I have a schedule to go to campus for almost everyday.
Attending some courses which are really difficult.
I really want to sleep, just let me sleep.

Because of my condition, I gave up to join Lautner Project 2012.
So sad :(

I didn't win in LCMF but that's okay.
Read the short story here.

Sorry for this weird and silly update.
I think I'm gonna sleep now.
Good night :)
